Important Announcement: the buildingSMART International Standards Summits in Montreal and Lillestrøm are Postponed
Due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), buildingSMART International (bSI) has some major announcements to make regarding events, meetings and the Solutions and Standards program.
buildingSMART International is extremely sorry for the change and would like to thank our community for their understanding and appreciates its support in getting through this difficult situation.
The International Council will now take place online as will the Strategic Advisory Council.
You can read the full press release below which includes FAQs.
buildingSMART International and the Open Geospatial Consortium
buildingSMART International (bSI) and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) have released an industry-defining paper as part of their joint working group under the name of the Integrated Digital Built Environment (IDBE). This paper aims to coordinate the development of the relevant data standards that are produced at each organisation. You can read the report below.
BIM and Geospatial: Learning from Practitioners Webinars
Join buildingSMART and OGC for a webinar series highlighting technical objectives, success stories and community best practices involving key domains in Geo-BIM such as the airports and railroad industries. These webinars include an introduction to the IDBE report.

The Technical Room Steering Committee - led by Greg Schleusner, AIA, HOK and Dr. Dennis Shelden, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - looks forward to sharing progress at the Virtual Summits.
Technical Roadmap – bSI’s Technical Director, Léon van Berlo has been working with the technical leadership (Technical Room Steering Committee, Standards Committee Technical Executive, Technical Room Groups) to create, discuss, and come to consensus on the future of buildingSMART’s technical foundations. Léon has given some insight into the direction of this effort in presentations at the Beijing Summit, bSI blog posts and articles/interviews for industry news outlets.
IDM Toolkit – This project proposes a user-focused framework for 1) creating a simple application for industry professionals to define their BIM processes based on the IDM methodology; 2) supporting the exchange of IDM’s (idmXML and the IDM server); and 3) supporting the use of computer-readable IDM’s for project execution planning and delivery; including the specification of exchange requirements (ERs).
Open CDE APIs – This proposal addresses opportunities to improve interoperability within the AEC software ecosystem by connecting data silos, transcending the gaps between tools built by different software vendors. The approach chosen by the proposed project is to develop interoperable, domain-specific APIs. These domain-specific APIs share a common “Foundation API” standardising authentication and identity.
IfcJSON – There is a proposal being forwarded through the buildingSMART process to address the standardized serialization of the IFC schema in JSON format. Currently, there are a number of independent research and opens source efforts to accomplish this task, but the proposed project would be an official buildingSMART result.
Even more activities are being proposed or solicited, working their way through the early stages of the bSI Process.
The IFC for Ports & Waterways project, which is part of the Infrastructure Room within buildingSMART International, aims to extend the IFC data model into the Maritime domain by describing the semantics and geometry of ports, waterways navigational facilities. You can join this Expert Panel to provide feedback by following the below steps:
Review the Property sets developments and associated documentation.
During the webinar the team will look to respond to as much of your feedback as possible. There is also a plan to address more detailed questions to you during the event. Registration can be found below.

The awards will take place at the International Standards Summit in Oslo, in October 2020. Keep your eye out next week for the submission page to be open!
Digital Twins Update
"Digital Twins" is fast becoming an important term that is impacted the built asset industry. With different characteristics and meanings, buildingSMART International is taking a leading role in defining what this means for the industry. The plan is for the group to deliver a short positioning paper and then open the group up to others in the community.
The topic of Digital Twins is relevant to all Rooms and therefore the group will be expanded once the direction is developed. The initial group is aiming to find a way of making this broad and inclusive for the whole community and the directive for the team is to ensure all those working on buildingSMART solutions and standards can participate.
Stay tuned for more ways to get involved.
