The buildingSMART Virtual Summit 2020
buildingSMART International has just completed the Virtual Summit 2020. There was a positive response to this event and would like to extend our thanks to the whole community. We had over 10,000 registered for 38 online webinars delivering around 63 hours of material. We've made all videos available as on-demand content on our video channel.
During these challenging times, it has been important for the community to stick together and at buildingSMART, we have experienced a heightened need for the work we do. We will continue to deliver the solutions and standards needed to transform the built asset industry.
Richard Petrie, Chief Executive, bSI said "I'm delighted we were able to put this event on at such short notice and open up the work that we do. The breadth and reach of the virtual summit has allowed us to communicate about our work and has clearly been well received. I'd like to express my thanks to the Rooms and the bSI leadership team for being able to put this on."
There is less than one month to go until the award submission portal closes. Submit your project for a chance to win a prestigious award. Do you have an exemplary project using buildingSMART openBIM solutions? We want to hear from you.

IFC4.3 Infrastructure Deployment Webinar - Project Introduction and Call for Participation
2020 has been a major milestone year for the Infrastructure Room with the achievement of the IFC4.3 Candidate Standard (Infrastructure Extension). The next goal is to successfully deploy and validate the newly developed schema and push it to a bSI Final Standard in accordance with the bSI process. The IFC Infrastructure Extension Deployment Project has been established for this purpose.
This first expert panel focuses on the deployment activities within the project and includes a call for participation. The team would especially encourage domain experts and software vendors to participate.
Date: 17th June, 2020 Time: 10:00 a.m. (CET - Central European Time) Duration: 90 minutes
The Infrastructure Room Steering Committee, led by Tiina Perttula, shared progress at the bSI virtual summit that took place in May 2020. Key areas progressed in recent months include:
IFC Infrastructure Extensions Deployment – as announced at the bSI Virtual Summit in May 2020, the candidate standard has now been published for a fully-harmonized IFC schema extension for infrastructure covering road, rail, bridge, ports & waterways as well as concepts that are common across those domains. The complete 5-part Report was submitted to the bSI Standards Committee Executive and is now part of the Candidate Standard documentation. All the reports can be found further in the newsletter.
InfraRoom Roadmap - The team has now concluded the InfraRoom roadmap and recommendations of future projects that either support the extensions to bSI products, support Open Infrastructure, or involve interaction/communication with industry stakeholders, other standards bodies/technical developments and bSI in general. The InfraRoom Roadmap will be published via bSI.
IFC Road – Led by Dr Hyounseok Moon, Karin Anderson and Juha Hyvarinen, this project has now been completed. Throughout 2019 this project hit its key milestones and the team did a wonderful job in completing the project in May 2020.
IFC Infrastructure Extensions Deployment: Candidate Standard
The IFC Infrastructure Extensions Deployment Project is now available as a five-part Canidate Standard.
As the "IFC Rail" project enters Phase 2, there is a new web page dedicated to the project. IFC Rail is buildingSMART's largest project to date. This project was assembled by a group of stakeholders keen to address industry challenges, develop better ways of working, deliver open standards and extend the current buildingSMART schema to fit their needs.
This call for participation web page is dedicated to the project and aims to capture the next phase.
