Welcome to the buildingSMART International Newsletter for June 2021.
Sponsorship is now open for the Autumn Virtual Summit and full details can be found in this edition. There are also two other sponsorship opportunities for the 'Facility Management -Equipment and Maintenance' and 'Facility Management and openBIM' projects. There is also an opportunity for free membership to bSI for those sponsoring the projects!
buildingSMART International has two new launches this month: firstly a brand new website for the hosting of its publications, and secondly 'Myth Busters' - a series of short and engaging videos which aim to dispel some common myths from the community.
There are more webinars not to be missed this month, as well as new episodes available in the Digital Twins Podcast.
The InfraRoom Steering Committee's newly elected members provide their election statements, and as always you can hear updates from the Chapter community and more!
Become a Sponsor of the Autumn
Virtual Summit and Awards Program
buildingSMART has started to look for venues for Spring 2022 as we hope to meet in person, but the next Summit will again be virtual. We are now pleased to advise that sponsorship for the Autumn Summit is open.
The buildingSMART International Virtual Summit Autumn 2021 will take place from Monday 27th September to Friday 8th October 2021 and includes the Awards Program. The popular roundtables will return once again, to be hosted by our Gold and Platinum sponsors. There will also be an Opening Plenary, keynotes from our sponsors, working room sessions, project updates, and much more.
Sponsorship starts from just €500 and our packages provide full exposure over this ten-day event. You have the opportunity to showcase your products or services, interact throughout the Summit and be part of buildingSMART's growing virtual events!
There are four sponsorship opportunities for you to consider via the link below; if you would like to become a sponsor, please email us at: summits@buildingsmart.org.
buildingSMART International Has a New Publications Website
buildingSMART International has a brand new website for the hosting of its publications. At present, both the Technical Roadmap produced in 2020 and the buildingSMART Awards Yearbook for 2020 can be found there, but expect more publications to be added regularly, starting with the Annual Report which is expected to be delivered in the coming weeks.
buildingSMART International have started a new 'Myth Buster' Series! This series aims to dispel myths and will give you some interesting perspectives from the community.
The first two Myth Busters are available now and feature Susan Keenliside, bSI Awards Program Manager and Richard Petrie, CEO of buildingSMART International.
There is a growing need to better manage the information for facility management (FM) in the built asset industry. As the use of BIM for project delivery has expanded and matured around the world, so has the handover of data generated by the process for operational and asset management uses by owners.
Finalizing the detailed project plan (DPP) for this bSI activity is well underway. One of the items that now needs to be concluded is who can provide financial sponsorship of the project.
bSI have hosted/are hosting a number of webinars throughout June, all of which are open to everyone and free to join. Below is an overview as well as a link to the Webinars section of the website, which has full details and the links for registration.
Join Aidan Mercer, Marketing Director bSI as he speaks to several prominent figures from the industry in the next two episodes of the Digital Twins Podcast. Below follows a summary of the new episodes available, which you can listen to on either Buzzsprout or Spotify by clicking the respective links below.
They talk about the meaning of digital twins, how Autodesk were an original founding partner of buildingSMART in 1994, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the landscape for software firms and their customers.
Chief Specialist, InfraBIM at the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency FTIA (Finnish Väylävirasto).
Hear from Tarmo about what their strategic vision is for the future, how they approach the subject of asset management and what frameworks are in place today.
2021 Awards Submission Period has Closed
The submission portal for the 2021 buildingSMART Awards closed on Monday and the submitted projects now lie in the hands of the triage team. After the triage process, the jury will score all projects over a 6 week period, with the finalists being announced at the end of August.
Be ready to join us for the Awards ceremony, which will take place on Thursday 7th October as part of the buildingSMART Autumn Virtual Summit 2021!
Hear from the New InfraRoom Steering Committee Members
The buildingSMART InfraRoom recently held elections for the appointment of its Steering Committee, which results in 5 newly elected SC members.
This month the InfraRoom shares with you statements from the newly elected members, having asked what motivated them to seek election and what they would like to focus on during their term on the committee.
IFC 4.3 Infrastructure extension for Roads, Bridges, Ports & Waterways: Infra Deployment Expert Panel
The pioneering effort to extend IFC into the domain of Infrastructure is now nearing completion. The Infra Extension project seeks to harmonise and validate IFC 4.3 for Roads, Bridges, Earthworks, Geotechnics, Ports & Waterways. There is close collaboration with a similar effort within the IFC Rail Project and both Projects are working hard to deliver IFC 4.3 as an official buildingSMART production standard which will be made available to implement and use by the industry at large.
On June 23rd at 14:00 CEST the Project Team will present the results of the endeavour to validate IFC4.3 before its general publication and implementation. As part of the buildingSMART standards process, we seek to ensure a broad international consensus for our development work is maintained. As Experts in your field, this is an opportunity to analyse and critique our work. Following this event, we will analyse your feedback and use it to help us proceed with the next stage in the approvals process to have IFC4.3 published as an official buildingSMART production standard.
Prior to the Expert Panel a draft report will be made available for registrants for review.
Please note this expert panel mainly focuses on the Roads, Bridges, Ports, Waterways, Earthworks and Geotechnical domains. The Railway domain is covered by a separate project.
Quarterly Activity Update from the Airport Room
The Airport Room activities are organized around 5 discussion topics that emerged as priorities for our international group of experts in the past couple of years:
• Identifying a list of airport-specific IFC elements • Connecting BIM and GIS • Sharing data to advance our industry • Using BIM to simulate the complex interdependencies of airport systems • Airport-specific aspects of digital twin considerations
One of the main challenges for airports today is that it is not clear what entities, types, properties, and quantities to choose from whilst working with critical airport object classes (or systems). Therefore, the creation of clear agreements within the airport community to maximize the value throughout the whole lifecycle of assets and reduce redundancies and inconsistencies. The airport entities project currently has a call for participation through the link, https://www.buildingsmart.org/standards/calls-for-participation/ifc-airport/.
Airport Room’s vision of BIM to GIS work is centered on seamlessly and securely sharing information between BIM and GIS in real-time. Airport Room categorizes use cases under collaboration, visualization, and spatial analysis. Accordingly, public participation, stakeholder engagement, environmental design impact analysis, shadow estimation, network analysis, and wayfinding analysis for decision-making can be listed as prior use case cases.
While the airport simulation project is in the early incubation stage, Airport Room has been investigating the extent of performing simulation and emulation for key operational activities such as baggage handling and security screening.
Lastly, Airport Room has been focusing on scoping out major resources and use cases to enable the feasible implementation of an Airport Digital Twin. Airport Room will be putting efforts in both defining and combining a set of key use cases under holistic sub-categorizations of an Airport Digital Twin including Digital Twin of Assets, Digital Twin of Processes, and Digital Twin of Business throughout a Plan-Build-Operate-Integrate (PBO-I) cycle.
