The buildingSMART International Standards Summit 2022

It will address how to drive digital transformation to facilitate resilience in the built asset industry through international collaboration.
As part of the summit agenda, buildingSMART Canada & Groupe BIM du Quebec will host the first annual national conference on how to enable A National Digital Twin Ecosystem through openBIM and connected technologies.

The AEC Magazine has published an IFC Special Report from buildingSMART UKI in their May/June edition. The report discusses the importance of IFC and its role in the AEC industry. Casey Rutland, chair of buildingSMART UKI, writes in-depth on the importance of standardizing data and how IFC achieves that, and Emma Hooper, Associate Director, Bond Bryan writes an interesting article about IFC.
The feature covers various topics including the importance of IFC for infrastructure in a detailed article from Emma Hooper, associate director and head of R&D at Bond Bryan Digital. And Dion Moult, Digital Engineer Manager at Lendlease, discusses Native openBIM and the rise of open source in AEC.

IFC 4.3 – A Major Milestone Introduction and Overview of the Current Status
Earlier this year Richard Petrie wrote a blog post on the current status of the IFC 4.3 final Production Standard. This is the first in a series of posts to mark and explain the achievement of sending the full IFC 4.3 final Production Standard to ISO to initiate the process of elevating the standard to become a formal ISO.
This milestone represents the conclusion of at least 7 years of concentrated project work and multiple projects across our community. It has been achieved with worldwide support from clients, especially government and infrastructure clients, AEC industry participant of all types, and with close involvement and support from software vendors. The significance and the opportunities this presents will be discussed in each post - keep an eye on our blog page to stay up to date.
The status of IFC 4.3 and the benefit of further extensions as IFC 4.4

Industry Survey: Understanding the role of BIM and CDEs Today
and Expectations for the Future
Published early in May 2022, this survey report provides interesting insights into the role of BIM, CDE's and the outlook for the future. 250 participants from around the world, mostly BIM professionals, provided the data for the report. The main findings are discussed in a recent blog post from Rick Bell, Senior Content Marketing Manager at Oracle Construction and Engineering, which you can read below.
Overall the survey found that BIM is continuing to expand from design and build into downstream phases of the project lifecycle. There was also a clear indication that cloud infrastructure is driving the digital transformation in these organizations. We can expect to see CDE's play a bigger role in the digital future.

The Open Standards Conference provided an opportunity to review open Standards state-of-practice development through industry reporting and presentation of real-world built environment Horizontal Infrastructure, as well as vertical buildings projects.

This session will discuss openBIM, the role of the buildingSMART Regulatory Room, and recent developments in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Singapore.

InfraBIM Open 2023 January 30 - February 1, 2023 - Tampere, Finland
buildingSMART Finland and RIL have just announced the InfraBIM Open 2023 will be hosted in Finland, in early 2023. This conference has been growing in recent years, with nearly 600 experts from 32 countries in attendance in 2020/2021.
If you are interested in speaking at the conference, the Call for Proposals is open until September 12th, 2022. InfraBIM Open also offers a great opportunity to promote your organization or products with various partnership packages available.
buildingSMART Denmark caught up with Lèon Van Berlo, Technical Director of bSI, during the second meeting in buildingSMART Denmark’s Technical Committee. In their conversation, Léon gave an update on bSI's Compliance Program, sustainability as a new bSI Room, and lowering barriers for the use of IFC through the user program.
The Regulatory Room strategy is to engage actors of the regulatory process to support the adoption of openBIM to improve the whole process. To achieve this goal buildingSMART (and we think the global building ecosystem) is tremendously interested in regulated firms and regulatory bodies' expectations.
Unsurprisingly, expectations are not the same everywhere and change over time, so in 2020 we decided to launch a survey to fix a point and discover and analyze a general perception about openBIM adoption in the compliance processes, collecting the points of view of both regulators and regulated industry.
The final goal of the assessment was to find the best messages and communications channels to improve the engagement needed to foster openBIM adoption in regulatory processes.
bSI Activity Proposal for IDM for Steel Construction:
Call for Participation and Sponsorship
The Building Room and Standards Committee of buildingSMART International has approved an activity proposal for the development of an IDM for Steel Construction. The project will identify relevant information and define needed accuracy in terms of an IDM. This IDM is targeting the transition of a design model into a fabrication model.
The project also aims to integrate openBIM Standards, in particular IFC, and optimize BIM-Processes within the steel construction industry as well as foster wide implementation of Steel IDM by vendors.
All industry and vendors are invited to participate in this development and be part of the project team. Opportunities exist to participate actively in the work and/or to sponsor the work and act as a stakeholder. Latest Industry Insights: What do Facility Managers need from BIM?
The Building Room has recently published a series of whitepapers offering a variety of perspectives on what Facility Managers (FM) need from BIM across a range of sectors. The use cases evaluate the needs and requirements for each sector and then discuss in depth the use of BIM. This was part of the “FM and openBIM” project which aimed to represent the FM industry in developing openBIM and the ecosystem of digital twins. The whitepapers from this project are now available. All whitepapers are available on the website in our Standards Library.
