The buildingSMART Virtual Summit Autumn 2021 takes place from Monday 27th September - Friday 8th October and tickets are on sale now. Tickets are available for as little as €100 when buying 20 tickets together - see the registration page below for more details.
buildingSMART International is delighted to share the full list of finalists for the Awards Program 2021. Finalists will be invited to present their project to an independent jury for consideration as part of the program. The finalist presentations will take place during the buildingSMART Virtual Summit between 4th – 6th October 2021 with the ceremony taking place on the 7th of October where the winners will be announced.
The General Assembly of Implementers meetings took place from Monday 6th - Wednesday 8th September and the recordings are available now.
The meetings provided an overview of development on BCF 3.0, IFC 4.3.x and IFC 5, and gave updates on the development of the API family of standards like the BCF API, Foundations API, and Documents API. There were also presentations on the Information Delivery Specification initiative (IDS), Software Certification, the Use Case Management tool and the bSDD, including official launch preparation.

The openBIM Marketplace competition drew to a close on Monday, with 8 proposals being voted to the top of the leaderboard. They will now be presented at the Virtual Summit on Tuesday 28th September. Here is a list of what you can expect to see:

Talking to a COBie Certified Professional
Associate Digital Information Specialist at Bond Bryan, Emma Hooper is the co-author of “Delivering COBie Using Autodesk Revit”, and was one of the very first digital construction specialists to succeed in becoming a buildingSMART COBie Certified Professional®.
Now a certified COBie Master, Emma is employed by contractors to define information requirements and deliver those requirements by setting up delivery workflows. Using COBie, Emma helps to define workflows to deliver and check data before handing that data over to a client.
We recently asked Emma to talk to us about her experiences and share some insights into her own COBie experiences.

We recently learned of the sad passing of Reijo Hänninen, an early supporter and key figure in the buildingSMART community. Some tributes are paid to Reijo below in the words of Rasso Steinmann and Patrick MacLeamy.
Rasso Steinmann:
"It was with great regret that I heard of the passing of Reijo Hänninen. Reijo was one of the very active members and supporters of buildingSMART. He was very passionate about the goals of our association. I had the pleasure of meeting Reijo in many international meetings and for many years he supported me in leading the Implementer Support Group. I learned to appreciate Reijo as a humorous person with whom one could enjoy a beer among friends even after the meetings, and his impressive, powerful voice with which he gave weight to his clear points of view remains unforgotten. My heartfelt condolences go to his family and friends."
Patrick MacLeamy:
"Reijo was very active in buildingSMART for many years, but I grew to know him best when he served with us on the buildingSMART ExCom, helping to guide our organization forward during some very challenging times. Reijo brought a positive attitude, booming voice and ready humor to our meetings while helping us focus on the most important priorities. Reijo and his wife had a hobby of dining in the world’s best-rated restaurants, and he loved to tell us stories about their latest dining experience
Reijo liked everyone, and had many buildingSMART friends around the globe. . All of us in the International Friendship Club have lost a dear friend. He will be missed – but not forgotten."
The Infra and Railway Rooms Deliver Major 4.3 Implementation and Validation Report
Since the announcement of IFC 4.3 (IFC 4.3_RC1) becoming a Candidate Standard in April 2020, there have been three follow-up projects designed to implement and validate the 4.3 standard before it goes to Production Standard in October 2021. The IFC Infra Extension Deployment and IFC Ports & Waterways projects have been managed by the Infrastructure Room.
The Infrastructure Room Steering Committee, led by Tiina Perttula, look forward to sharing progress at the bSI Virtual Summit that will take place from 27th September 2021.
Activities update: IFC 4.3 - the IFC 4.3 Implementation and Validation Report and related documentation have been produced by the Infrastructure and Railway Rooms. This project is now for active voting and approval before being managed by bSI Technical Services to ensure this standard will be part of the next release of ISO 16739, expected to be published in mid-2022.
IFC Ports and Waterways – we are looking for domain experts and funding to support the IFC extensions focusing on the following related areas: Protection & Environmental; Maritime Networks & Systems; and Maritime Power Generation. If you are interested, please contact BuildingSMART.
IFC Tunnels – the IFC Tunnel project will introduce IFC schema extensions to cover underground structures: engineering design, construction, and operation. The project scope looks to embed objects and properties describing tunnels’ structural components, excavation and construction methods, and systems that enable tunnel operation.
The project team, of 40+ experts, benefits from a strong international consensus incl. the support from the International Tunnelling Association (ITA). The team aims to share its 1st deliverables by end of 2021.

OGC Seeking Sponsors for a new IDBE Pilot linking Geospatial and Building Information Models
The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), together with buildingSMART International (bSI) invite organizations to express their interest in sponsoring the OGC Integrated Digital Built Environment Pilot.
The Pilot will explore, through real-world use cases, the current state-of-the-art in geospatial and Building Information Model (BIM) data integration and forge a path for better-integrated solutions. Responses are due September 30, 2021.
