Welcome to the buildingSMART International Newsletter for December 2022.
"2022 has been a tumultuous year with the unexpected and sad loss of Richard Petrie as our CEO. It has been my privilege to serve as Interim CEO working with the dedicated leadership team and staff to help continue business operations. 2022 has also been a year of advancement with the addition of our Compliance Director, finalizing IFC4.3 for submission to ISO, our first live International Summit since Covid held in Montreal, and a successful search to recruit our new full-time CEO. 2023 will be the start of a new and exciting era for the buildingSMART community with pent-up demand from the industry and unprecedented support by software vendors for our open standards and services. Thank you all for your continued support and participation." - Ian Howell

On November 16th the European Federation of Engineering Consultancy Associations (EFCA) published their latest policy document "Delivering a resilient, green and digital built environment: Manifesto from European Engineering for 2030 and beyond".
The policy recommendation to steer the digital transformation includes:
Implement the findings of the DigiPLACE project, which, with partners from across the value chain, developed a Reference Architecture Framework for an EU digital platform for the construction industry. Ensure its eventual inclusion in relevant policy.
Demand mandatory adoption by public clients in procurement, of open standards and eliminate prescriptive use of proprietary software and file formats.
Ensure that regulation aimed at promoting data sharing, such as the Data Act, guarantees fair treatment and protection of intellectual property. Close loopholes to make it impossible for third parties, including Information and Communications Technology providers, to misuse data from technical design solutions for commercial gain.
Follow the link below to read the whole manifesto. This is important progress in mandating open standards and for the buildingSMART vision, thank you to those that contributed to the manifesto from the buildingSMART community.

On Monday, 5th December buildingSMART International hosted a memorial afternoon in honour of the late CEO, Richard Petrie. Members from across the community joined his family to remember the many contributions he made during his time at bSI, and share anecdotes of the years he was leading the community.
During his time as the CEO of bSI, Richard developed a plan to bring together the entire built asset industry to focus on developing solutions and standards for better data interoperability. He set up the bSI management office, hired various members of staff, and professionalized the community. He helped to grow membership and the chapter network and delivered major milestones along the way.
The pinnacle of his achievements was referenced at the memorial, with many in attendance remarking on his fairness, honesty, and clear vision. Richard has left a legacy that lasts the test, and he continues to be missed.
There is also a JustGiving page set up by the Petrie family. All donations welcomed.
