New Year Message
2023 marked an exciting and highly successful year in buildingSMART’s history.
Huge progress was seen across many aspects of buildingSMART, which fall into three main focus areas:
Completing the openBIM Ecosystem.
Enabling openBIM adoption and use.
Evolving how we work as a community.
Read this blog post by CEO Clive Billiald, as he reviews the achievements of 2023 and looks ahead to 2024.
buildingSMART International is pleased to announce that ISO has approved IFC 4.3 as a final standard. This means IFC 4.3 will now become internationally accredited as the latest version of the ISO 16739 standard.
Following a round of improvements and amendments from earlier phases of the ISO process, IFC 4.3 received 100% approval and will be formally published in the coming weeks.
Clive Billiald, Chief Executive of buildingSMART International, commented, "Having formal approval from ISO that IFC 4.3 will become an internationally accredited standard is excellent news for our industry. I do not doubt that the quality of the standard has been improved through this process, and I commend the work of everyone involved over a number of years. Now we look forward to supporting the adoption and use of this new standard by the industry and software vendor community".

buildingSMART International held the latest Domain Leaders conference in a wintry Oslo, Norway last week. With Domains being at the very heart of buildingSMART, each representing a specific sector of the built asset industry, the conference addressed:
The complementary roles of Strategic Projects to deliver the core standards and services which support all Domains, and Domain Projects to help customise and implement these standards and services within each industry sector.
Strengthening the pathway from business requirements, through project outputs, to the delivery of tangible business benefits.
Filtering and refining project proposals to help enhance the quality and impact of Domain projects.
Coordinating across Domains to capture shared requirements.
Understanding the level of openBIM expertise required for project delivery and the mechanisms for accessing support when needed.
Thank you to all Domain Leaders for your vital support and contributions, and to generous host Bane NOR for looking after the team in a particularly snowy and beautiful Oslo.

Geo Digital Twin and openBIM for the digitalisation of infrastructure assets and extensive estates of public administrations and private managers: the success story of MUIF in RFI
The AECO market increasingly requires digital systems for the management of complex assets oriented towards BIM and GIS integration and based on open standards, to guarantee the construction and management of the information system over time, data ownership, and security.
During this webinar, buildingSMART International presented technology trends and standardization strategies for creating Geo Digital Twins.
We continued by delving into how the market solutions offered by ACCA software and Esri enable integrated management between the openBIM world and the GIS world, examining the functionality and use cases linked to management via the Geo Digital Twin.
Finally, a success story was presented regarding the application of these paradigms in the Transportation sector, Railway area: RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana) illustrated the implementation strategy applied to the MUIF (Single Railway Infrastructure Model) and the results of the analysis and experiments conducted.
Richard Kelly, Operations Director at bSI, has been talking with members of the Steering Committees from the different buildingSMART Domains in the form of podcast chats. Listen to two more episodes from last year:
Tristan McDonnell
Tristan McDonnell served for many years on the buildingSMART International Infrastructure Room. We discuss this as well as his responsibilities being a Director at ARUP. We recall the experiences developing openBIM standards for infrastructure and the positive impact that IFC 4.3 is going to have on the industry.
Arisca Droog discusses her roles at Schiphol Airport and the buildingSMART International Airport Domain. We cover the benefits of digital transformation for the whole life asset management of the airport estate, elephants, and the importance of a fitness regime.
Membership of bSI is a great way to get active in buildingSMART. A wide range of benefits includes active participation in Domains, webinars, voting, and much more!
