October's newsletter is
brought to you by:
Artur Tomczak
Position at buildingSMART:
bSDD Product Manager
Time with the company:
10 months
Based in:
Oslo, Norway
(but originally from Poland)
Hobbies:
Wind/kitesurfing, hiking, skiing, freediving 🌊🚶⛷️
A little about me:
Previously, I worked as a computational engineer automating tedious structural design work, until I realised we rarely optimize for the sustainability of buildings. In 2021, my supportive partner and I moved to Norway so I could pursue a PhD in digital support for circular building design. In our spare time, we enjoy Norwegian nature, cycling and hiking. When not travelling, I help to restore Oslofjord by freediving.
I joined the team of buildingSMART International as bSDD Product Manager when I realised that technology is here to help us, but it alone won't save us from the climate emergency. We need collective effort and agreement on how to apply it.
Join Artur Tomczak at SpeckleCon
Join Artur at SpeckleCon on Tuesday 14th November, for his presentation 'Give your data meaning using Speckle and bSDD'.
This free online conference, now including one dev day, will focus on how to unlock data to fuel collaboration, automation, and connectivity across all design workflows. Over two days, participate in talks and workshops with fellow designers, coders, and entrepreneurs. Together, explore and build the tools and workflows you need to deliver and create value at scale - pushing the boundaries of design with data-driven workflows and unprecedented connectivity!
Why are they doing this? "Data is at the heart of AEC: vendors are increasingly locking it in, and it’s down to us to build an open, modern ecosystem that delivers for all - let’s join forces!"

openBIM Awards 2023: Winners Announced
buildingSMART International is delighted to announce the full list of winners and special mentions from the openBIM Awards 2023.
All the finalists in this year’s program presented their projects during the buildingSMART International Standards Summit in Lillestrøm, Norway, on Wednesday 20th of September. An elite jury deliberated following each set of presentations to select a winner from each category. A total of ten winners and five special mentions were announced at a live awards ceremony that evening.
This episode was recorded during the buildingSMART International Summit in Norway when Antony Oliver sat down with Patrick MacLeamy to talk about the history of buildingSMART, his personal journey and the role of digital standards and services. You can listen to the full episode below.
Would you like to learn more about the Strategic Roadmap developed by bSI? There is now a dedicated webpage with next steps as the vision of buildingSMART of the seamless exchange of trusted information across the built environment ismet.
Addressing these challenges demands both optimised decision-making and increased automation across the project lifecycle. In turn, this requires the ability to fuse together project data from all sources to create comprehensive and trusted information – in a machine-interpretable format – and to retain and build on this information throughout the life of the project. buildingSMART establishes the open digital standards and services that allows this to happen.
The latest General Assembly of Implementers meeting took place in Vélizy-Villacoublay, France, on 30-31 August. The two-day meetings were sponsored and supported by Dassault Systèmes.
Recordings from the two days have been published on bSI's YouTube channel:
The next meeting will take place on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th February 2024, sponsored by Oracle and hosted at the Oracle Innovation Lab just outside Chicago, USA.
In-person registration for this event is now open:

The 2023 to 2027 Infrastructure Domain Roadmap was presented at the recent bSI Standards Summit in Lillestrom, Norway. It includes initiatives and project proposals to implement the use of IFC 4.3 in real-world infrastructure projects as well as further development of standards and technical solutions that will enhance the use of digitalization in the built-asset industry.
Topics include Asset Operations Handover, IFC and Geospatial for Infrastructure, Model as a Legal Document, bSDD for Infrastructure, role of InfraBIM in delivering digital twins, Infra Extension projects for Tunnel, Bridge, Ports, and much more as set out in the Roadmap-on-a-Page graphic above.
So, if you want to hear about these exciting plans or, better still, participate and/or sponsor some of them, please join the IDSC on the 17th or 18th of October to hear more.
