We're delighted to bring you the latest news, updates, and opportunities from across the global community.  

This month, following the successful Berlin Summit, we are excited to showcase the highlights reel and news of how and when you can access the session recordings. We unveil the 2025 openBIM Awards winners and an important save the date for the next International Summit to be held in Porto, Portugal.

 

We are pleased to announce that Mexico has been formally approved as a Chapter-in-formation.

We held our first Summit in Berlin

We welcomed 765 attendees from  49 countries around the world, 650 who travelled to Berlin to join the event in person. A special thank you to all the event sponsors.

 

All recordings from the Summit are accessible through the 'Replay' tab in RingCentral. The videos will now be post-processed and then published on the buildingSMART International YouTube channel in approximately 4  weeks.

openBIM Awards 2025 Winners Announced

buildingSMART International is pleased to announce the winners for the 2025 buildingSMART openBIM Awards. The finalists presented their projects to an international jury as part of the program’s final round. Presentations took place on Tuesday, 23 September, during the buildingSMART International Summit in Berlin, with the winners revealed the following day.

IFC 5 Core Consultation

The Standards Committee Executive (SCE) has reviewed and approved the IFC 5 Core Draft Project Plan consultation, which received a record 60 responses, the highest to date. After weighting, 67% were in favour, showing clear support to proceed. Feedback ranged from strong endorsement to calls for a more cautious approach. The SCE agreed the consultation provided a solid mandate for the IFC 5 Core Working Group to prepare a Final Project Plan that addresses these points openly and in detail.

Information Delivery Specification for Occupant Movement Analysis Technical Report

The Information Delivery Specification (IDS) for Occupant Movement Analysis (OMA) Technical Report has been formally approved. This milestone marks a major step forward in improving openBIM-based workflows for simulating building circulation and evacuation. The project, led by experts from the University of Greenwich, University of Canterbury, and partners across industry.

As the industry moves toward integrated, lifecycle-oriented digital twins, Siemens has released an IFC Guide tailored to Facility Management (FM) and Lifecycle Twin use cases. The guide shows how openBIM and IFC can help you:

  • Support data continuity from design to operation and renovation
  • Enable interoperable workflows between BIM, IoT, and FM systems
  • Support regulatory compliance and asset transparency
